Root Rocks – Premium Mineral Plant Substrate

Root Rocks is a free-draining, mineral-based growing medium designed to mimic natural growing conditions while delivering the ideal air-to-water ratio for healthy root development. This carefully balanced substrate is especially well suited to indoor plants and species that thrive in higher-humidity environments.

Suitable for a wide range of plants — including Alocasia, Hoyas, aroids, cacti, succulents, and bonsai — Root Rocks supports stronger growth with reduced maintenance.

Unlike traditional soil, Root Rocks allows for more frequent watering without waterlogging, helping minimise common issues such as fungus gnats and root rot.

Key Benefits

  • Mimics natural soil structures found in the wild

  • Ideal air-to-water balance

  • Can be watered more often than soil

  • Reduced plant care time

  • Fewer pest issues

  • Encourages faster, healthier growth

  • Helps lower the risk of root rot

What Are Root Rocks?

Root Rocks resemble small stones or gravel and act as a soil substitute or soil amendment. This premium blend combines pumice, vermiculite, lava rock, zeolite, and Fluval Stratum, creating a stable structure that provides excellent drainage, moisture retention, and nutrient availability.

By replicating the way many plants grow among rocks and mineral substrates in nature, Root Rocks promote consistent airflow around the roots, making them ideal for humidity-loving plants and indoor growing environments where moisture control and airflow are essential.

For plants that prefer well-draining substrates, such as aroids and Hoyas, Root Rocks are a breath of fresh air — literally. Cacti, succulents, and bonsai also thrive thanks to the substrate’s long-lasting, non-compacting structure.

Using Root Rocks for Semi-Hydroponic Growing

Root Rocks are ideally suited for semi-hydroponic plant growing. The mineral-based structure mimics natural conditions where roots receive constant access to air, moisture, and nutrients without becoming waterlogged.

When used semi-hydroponically, Root Rocks:

  • Maintain excellent airflow around roots

  • Hold moisture while preventing soggy conditions

  • Support consistent nutrient uptake

  • Reduce the risk of root rot and pest issues

For semi-hydro setups, use Root Rocks as a 100% mineral substrate in a container with no drainage. A base layer of clay pebbles (LECA) can be added to create a small water reservoir and allow easy monitoring of water levels. Nutrients should be supplied via a diluted liquid fertiliser using a little-and-often approach.

This method is especially effective for indoor plants, aroids, and humidity-loving species such as Alocasia and Hoyas.

Fertilising with Root Rocks

Root Rocks include a small amount of slow-release nutrients from Fluval Stratum, however ongoing fertilisation is recommended for optimal growth.

We suggest using GT Foliage Focus with a little-and-often feeding routine to maintain steady nutrient availability over time.

How to Use Root Rocks

Root Rocks are highly versatile and can be used in several ways:

25% Method – Drainage Support
Use Root Rocks at the base of pots to improve drainage, particularly in containers without drainage holes.

50% Method – Soil & Pest Control Blend
Mix Root Rocks with potting soil to improve airflow and help reduce pest issues such as fungus gnats. This method bridges traditional soil and semi-hydro growing.

100% Method – Full Mineral / Semi-Hydro Growing
Grow plants entirely in Root Rocks by removing all organic matter. For best results, use a glass vessel (no drainage) with a base layer of clay pebbles (LECA) to easily monitor water levels.

The Versatility of Root Rocks

Root Rocks can also be mixed evenly throughout potting soil to create a heavier, more free-draining mix that maintains structure over time. This makes it suitable for a wide range of plants and growing styles, especially indoor collections.

Whether you’re new to plant care or a seasoned plant collector, Root Rocks simplify maintenance while supporting healthier, more resilient plants.

Long-Lasting & Sustainable

One of the standout features of Root Rocks is its longevity. Unlike organic substrates that break down over time, this mineral mix retains its structure for years, making it a low-maintenance and sustainable choice for
