We’ve developed this blend to be a true game-changer for modern plant care, particularly when dealing with common pests like fungus gnats. Its mineral structure helps create an environment that discourages pest activity while promoting even nutrient distribution and maintaining an optimal air-to-water ratio. If you’re looking for a substrate that performs like Pon and other premium semi-hydro mediums, you’re in the right place. After launching our Living Soil and Aroid Mix, creating a high-performance mineral substrate was the natural next step — and we’re incredibly excited with the results. We think you and your plants will be too.

Roots Rocks – Premium All-in-One Substrate

Roots Rocks is a high-quality, mineral-based growing medium designed to support strong, healthy plant growth. Crafted with a synergistic blend of ingredients, this substrate delivers excellent aeration, superior drainage, and reliable moisture retention — all essential for thriving indoor plants, aroids, and rare species. Its stable structure ensures long-term root health, improved nutrient uptake, and consistent performance in both traditional pots and semi-hydro setups.

Roots Rocks is especially effective for juvenile plants, providing the ideal balance of oxygen and moisture needed for fast root establishment and early growth. Young plants settle in quickly, developing strong, healthy root systems from the start.

For growers working with more mature specimens, we also offer Roots Rocks Next Gen — a substrate engineered specifically for teenage to fully established plants. Next Gen delivers increased stability, enhanced nutrient buffering, and a structure suited to larger, more developed root systems.

Perfect for plant collectors, rare plant enthusiasts, and anyone looking to optimise root development, Roots Rocks creates a balanced environment that mimics natural growing conditions. Stronger roots, healthier foliage, and improved long-term plant performance start with the right substrate — and Roots Rocks delivers exactly that.

Root Rocks – The Ultimate Mineral Substrate for Indoor Plants

Root Rocks is designed to provide the perfect air-to-water ratio, making it an ideal growing medium for a wide range of plants — from Alocasia and Hoyas to cacti, succulents, bonsai, and other species that love excellent drainage.

Key Benefits of Root Rocks

  • Allows more frequent watering compared to traditional soil

  • Reduces overall plant-care time

  • Minimises pest problems, including fungus gnats

  • Promotes faster, stronger root growth

  • Helps lower the risk of root rot

Crafted from premium mineral ingredients — pumice, zeolite, vermiculite, and Aqua Scaper’s Soil — Root Rocks acts as a highly effective soil alternative. Its gravel-like structure keeps roots aerated, supported, and free from compaction, offering a cleaner and more controlled growing experience than standard potting mixes.

Why Root Rocks Works So Well

For plant types that thrive in well-draining substrates, such as Aroids, Hoyas, cacti, succulents, and bonsai, this mix provides the ideal environment. The high porosity improves oxygen flow to the roots while allowing water to move freely through the medium — preventing stagnation and reducing moisture-related issues.

The Power of Zeolites

Zeolites are one of the standout components of Root Rocks. These natural volcanic minerals offer several key advantages:

  • Capture and bind harmful substances such as heavy metals

  • Assist with water retention without causing waterlogging

  • Help stabilise pH, promoting healthier root environments

Their unique structure makes zeolites one of the most valuable ingredients for modern mineral-based plant substrates.

Fertilising with Root Rocks

While Root Rocks includes a small amount of slow-release nutrition from Aqua Soil, it still benefits from ongoing fertilisation — especially for fast-growing plants.

We recommend using GT Foliage Focus with a “little and often” feeding routine to keep nutrients balanced and readily available.

How to Use Root Rocks

Root Rocks is extremely versatile and can be used in several ways depending on your plant’s needs:

1. The 25% Method (Drainage Support)

Add a 25% layer of Root Rocks at the bottom of pots — ideal for containers without drainage holes or plants prone to overwatering.

2. The 50% Method (Fungus Gnat Reduction)

Mix 50% Root Rocks with soil or use as a thick top layer. This creates a physical barrier that helps deter fungus gnats while improving drainage.

3. The 100% Method (Full Semi-Hydro)

Use Root Rocks as a complete soil replacement. For best results, plant in a glass pot or vase with a small layer of LECA at the bottom so you can easily monitor moisture levels.

Mixing Root Rocks with Potting Soil

Root Rocks can also be blended evenly into traditional soil mixes to:

  • Improve drainage

  • Increase air flow

  • Reduce soil compaction

  • Add weight to prevent top-heavy plants from tipping

This makes it suitable for both beginners and experienced plant collectors looking to elevate their potting mixes.

Why Plant Lovers Are Talking About Root Rocks

Root Rocks is quickly becoming a favourite among indoor plant collectors and enthusiasts — and for good reason. Its premium mineral composition keeps the substrate airy and structured for years, supporting healthier roots and reducing the risk of soil-borne pests and diseases.

Unlike organic soil, Root Rocks doesn’t break down, meaning your substrate maintains its performance long-term.

Long-Lasting, Sustainable, and Low Maintenance

One of the biggest advantages of Root Rocks is its exceptional longevity. You can reuse the substrate for years with minimal maintenance, making it a sustainable and cost-effective choice for collectors who want reliable results without constant repotting or substrate replacement.
