Why Use New Zealand Tree Fern – Soft Tropical Substrate

This substrate is made from sustainably harvested New Zealand tree fern fibers, processed to create a soft, lightweight, and highly porous medium that mimics the natural conditions of tropical rainforests. It provides excellent aeration and drainage, while retaining enough moisture to keep roots healthy and stress-free.

Ideal for tropical plants, ferns, orchids, bromeliads, and container plants, this substrate encourages robust root systems and supports long-term plant vitality. Gardeners and plant enthusiasts use it to replicate natural growing conditions, reduce transplant shock, and promote strong, healthy growth.

Its organic, natural composition also supports beneficial microbial activity, improving overall soil health and nutrient uptake. By using this substrate, plants thrive in environments that closely resemble their native tropical habitats.

How to Use

  1. Potting Tropical Plants & Orchids:

    • Mix New Zealand Tree Fern – Soft Tropical Substrate with Root Rocks at a ratio of approximately 70% substrate to 30% Root Rocks for optimal aeration and drainage.

    • Fill pots with the mixture and plant seedlings or mature plants directly.

    • Ensure the base of the plant is surrounded by the substrate mixture for stable root support.

  2. Layering for Epiphytes:

    • Use as a top layer or mixed with Root Rocks, Orchiata, bark, or coir media to enhance aeration.

  3. General Care:

    • Water as needed; the substrate–Root Rocks mix retains moisture while allowing excess to drain naturally.

    • Replace or refresh the mix every 1–2 years to maintain optimal plant health.

Pro Tip: Combining the substrate with Root Rocks (or other aeration media) ensures excellent aeration and drainage, promoting strong, healthy root systems for tropical and epiphytic plants.
